Q: What are the advantages of Engineered Stiles over Traditional Solid Lumber?
Well, this has many layers to its answer. It really all goes back to the quality of lumber being cut and shipped today. Since old growth lumber has been protected by laws for some time with stringent penalties, the result has been an influx of fast growth tree species with large growth patterns and various tensile strengths. With this change, there has now become an issue of dimensionally unstable woods that can no longer be kiln dried or stored properly. Many species have been plantation grown, which causes problems with insects, durability and overall quality.
Since we are nowhere near changing our manufacturing restrictions, this has resulted in the need for engineered lumber products. One of the most prominent of these is Engineered Door Stiles and Rails. This process takes the work and aggravation out of sorting wood for straight and flawless pieces. We do that part in our milling process, thereby eliminating your waste and expensive labor out of the end product costs. Additionally, we also are able to laminate different veneers or “skins” to the cores we use. This means you can now have a Walnut Interior and Sapele Exterior Door Stile. Third, it also helps to stay straighter and be more durable than traditional solid lumber, since all of the surface tensions are cut out at the mill BEFORE being assembled into a stile. The dimensional stability, infinite variability, and cost-effective nature of Engineered Stiles and Rails are why they have been a staple in the world of Wood Door Building today.
Q: What does an Engineered Stile look like when it arrives at my plant?
We ship our stiles in one of three ways:
(1) S4S or “Finished” Blanks – this means that all four sides have been smoothed out through our moulders and are at the finish size you need them to begin your processing, profiling and assembly.
(2) Moulder Blanks – this is an unfinished stile that is a the full size of the rough parts as they come out of our presses. These are popular for the larger shops who have moulding capabilities and exacting tolerances to adhere to.
(3) CNC Blanks – this is for the CNC equipped facilities that simply want it to the right “finished” thickness (ex. 1-3/4″ or 2-1/4″), but sill want the edge blocks rough to be straightened and profiled on their CNC machines.

Q: What is the typical lead time and shipment method?
Typical lead times are 7-10 works days from the time a PO is placed, though some larger orders or special specialized species may require lengthier times. Most orders are shipped via a fleet of LTL carriers whom we have established relationships with over the years. All items are crated and are FOB OUR DOCK unless otherwise stated. This means that almost any area of the country can be reached within 3 weeks time.
